NEW arrival Fabio Tavares admits the offer to join Mark Robin’s project at Coventry City was too tempting to turn down, following the forward’s deadline day transfer from League One Rochdale.

The Portuguese native, 20, ends a five-year spell at Dale – having progressed through the club’s youth ranks and broken into the first team in 2019 – by penning a two-and-a-half year deal with the Sky Blues.

Tavares made 39 appearances in all for the Crown Oil Arena club, netting four goals during that time, and now has his sights set on hitting the ground running with Coventry – albeit with the frontman initially being blooded in City’s under-23’s side.

“It’s a new blessing and a new chapter for me, I’m excited and I can’t wait to get going and I’m just so thankful for this opportunity,” he said.

“My agent rang me and told me there was an opportunity to come and play for a massive club like Coventry and I knew then straight away that I had to take it and I couldn’t say no.

“We played against Coventry last year, who had a great team. So I knew coming here and working with the coaching staff that I couldn’t say no and I knew it was the next step and the right step for me.

“In the past the club have had some good young players that have gone on to have wonderful careers and I think this is the right place for me.”

Manager Mark Robins made the promising youngster his final addition of the winter transfer window, on what was a busy deadline day for all concerned with City.

Heading out the door were Declan Drysdale, who made a loan move to League Two outfit Cambridge United, while Gervane Kastaneer was also shipped out on a temporary basis – heading north of the border to Scottish Championship side Hearts.
