THREE athletes from Coventry have been selected to compete at the 2016 School Games at Loughborough University and Sheffield next month.

1,600 athletes will compete in 12 sports across four days at the national multi-sport event, which runs from September 1-4.

Eleven of the events will take place at Loughborough University while the swimmers will be competing at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre’s Olympic-sized pool in Sheffield.

Megan Varley, 17, will represent England Midlands in Rugby Sevens and is looking forward to competing against the very best.

She said: “I am over the moon to be able to further my rugby experience by playing with and against the best talent within the British Isles.”

Whitley Academy pupil Eva Vicary, 16, will represent England Central in Swimming: “I am so excited to be competing again at the School Games,” said Eva.

Cardinal Newman pupil Siobhan Fitzpatrick, 18, will represent England Central in Wheelchair Basketball and is preparing for her sixth School Games.

She added: “I am honoured to be leading the team to hopefully their third consecutive gold medal. I’m excited to be able to enjoy my last experience at such a well organised event!

“As the most experienced wheelchair basketball athlete at the event I’m hoping I will be able to inspire the future stars of the event.”

The young athletes will be following in the footsteps of some of Britain’s biggest sporting stars who have competed at the event before going on to senior international success.

Previous competitors include Olympic gold medallist and world-record breaking swimmer Adam Peaty, Paralympic champions Hannah Cockroft, Ellie Simmonds and Jonnie Peacock, heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson and GB sprinter Adam Gemili.

The 1,600 athletes will be supported by 400 volunteers, many of which will be young people. Young reporters will be among the journalists reporting the action and many of the officials and coaches will also be young people.
