TRANSFER - Coventry City sign Manchester City youngster on loan

Coventry Editorial 12th Jul, 2022   0

COVENTRY City have signed teenage defender Callum Doyle on a season-long loan from Premier League champions Manchester City.

The 18-year-old joins the club off the back of helping England under-19’s claim European Championship glory in Slovakia this summer, scoring in the final against Israel.

And the centre-back helped Sunderland achieve promotion from League One last season, playing 39 games as the Black Cats returned to the Championship via the play-offs.

Doyle told ccfc.co.uk: “I’m buzzing to finally get it over the line. I’m happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started.

“The playing style here suits me, the way that I bring the ball out and the way that I link up with players. It suits me down to a tee.

“I’m very composed on the ball. I like to have it at my feet, so that’s what fans can expect from me this season.

“I spoke to the manager here at the training ground and over the phone while I was away, and it is clear that the football here suits me.

“I’m looking forward to the season and hopefully I can do my bit by playing well.”

Sky Blues boss Mark Robins added: “We are delighted to welcome Callum to Coventry City.

“He is a really good player with a lot of potential, who we know a lot about, and we’re all looking forward to working with him.

“Callum is a regular in the England set-up and was a key player in helping the under-19’s win the European Championships only a few weeks ago, scoring in the final.

“He enjoyed a successful first season with Sunderland, helping them win promotion and, as I say, we are very happy to be able to welcome him to the club.

“I’d also like to thank everyone at Manchester City for their cooperation in Callum joining us this season.”

Doyle becomes City’s second signing of the summer following the arrival of Kasey Palmer from Bristol City last month.
