United stung by Pickett's winner for Bees

Coventry Editorial 11th Sep, 2019   0

COVENTRY United Ladies are still searching for their first win of the season, after going down 2-1 at London Bees in the FA Women’s Championship.

Lauren Pickett struck the winner just before half time after Amber Hughes had levelled from Taylor O’Leary’s opener, with Sue Wood keeping out a second-half penalty to deny the hosts a third.

United started the stronger of the two sides and were twice denied by Bees keeper Sarah Quantrill, before an unmarked O’Leary headed home from a set-piece delivery.

Coventry were back on level terms when Hughes matched good build up play by Chelsea Weston with her finish just after the half-hour mark.

But after Pickett’s mazy run into the area ended with the keeper being rounded, the midfielder had the simplest of finishes into an empty net to restore the lead.

With chances at a premium in the second half, Wood’s penalty save with her legs did at least provide a highlight, though it was scant consolation as United lost their first game of the season.

The Ladies also make their return to Coventry this weekend, hosting Lewes on Sunday (2pm) in a match that is being broadcast on the FA Channel app and website.
