CYCLING: MARTON-based rider Barrier Mitchell went one step closer to winning the World Masters Time Trial Championships on Saturday.

The 70-year-old, who races for Coventry’s Elite Cycle Race Team M.I Racing, finished third at the UCI World Championships qualifying event held near Cambridge.

Mitchell is the current LVRC National Champion and has a total of 25 British Championship wins to his name.

After his efforts on Saturday, he has now qualified for the world championships to be held at Albi in southern France this August.

Elsewhere Mitchell’s team mate Pete Smith also finished third in the 60-65 age group – he qualified too.

The weekend marked another outstanding success for the Coventry-based team.
