Wasps Netball's 'dream team' set for season opener at fellow Superleague newcomers Glasgow

NETBALL: TAMSIN Greenway says she has been able to build her ‘dream team’ ahead of Wasps Netball’s Superleague debut.

Wasps Netball face Sirens in front of a sell-out crowd at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena on Tuesday (February 21) – with the game also being shown live on Sky Sports Mix (ch 407).

The clash sees two of the Superleague’s newest sides take to the court, with Wasps and Sirens only forming last year.

Greenway joined Wasps Netball from Surrey Storm as Director of Netball when the formation of the club was announced in June 2016 and she admits it was an opportunity too good to turn down.

She said: “We want to do well here, we want to put out performances on the court, build a fanbase and build a club that people want to aspire to – we’re moving in the right direction for all those things to happen.

“It was nice to be able to get my dream team, this is my pick, this is who I wanted, and it’s great to bring together such a group of talented athletes.

“We’ve become a target, of course we have. We’ve brought in a number of high calibre players, which I’ve worked with for a long time.

“For us, the aim is to get into the play-offs, then anything can happen. I will be surprised if this group of players finish outside the top four.”

In preparation for their inaugural season, Wasps Netball set about securing some of the biggest names and talents in the sport.

Stars such as last season’s Superleague top scorer Rachel Dunn, South Africa captain Bongiwe Msomi and experienced England international Natalie Haythornthwaite are among Wasps Netball’s recruits.

Haythornthwaite, who was an ever-present for Manchester Thunder last season, says she is looking forward to the Sirens challenge on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old said: “Sirens are a bit of an unknown. They’re a new club, with some great players, and it will be a good run out to see what we can do against them.

“On Tuesday, I want to get on that court, do a job for Wasps and put out a really good performance. We have to set our own benchmark.

“After ten years in Superleague, I want to win that trophy so bad, I’m not going to go down without a fight and I’m hoping that this year is the year.”

Action from the Emirates Arena on Tuesday will be shown live on Sky Sports Mix (7.45pm centre pass).

Ticket prices for Wasps Netball’s first home league game on March 5 against Hertfordshire Mavericks start at £10 for adults, while under-10s go free.
