Westwood Academy students treated to Wasps hospitality before tour of Romania

Coventry Editorial 23rd Feb, 2019   0

WESTWOOD Academy Students are gearing up to be put through their paces by Wasps, before heading on a tour of Romania.

The next generation of Coventry rugby stars are set to head to Bucharest over Easter, where they will face two local sides during their five day stay.

Twenty students from the Academy will first be showcasing their talents to Wasps Community coaches at Tile Hill School, which will be attended by Paul Sackey.

In addition, the group are being invited for a tour of Wasps’ Broadstreet training pitches followed by a Q&A with Wasps first-team players.

The group are hoping to raise £5,000 prior to the trip, which will support their travelling costs, and are holding a raffle, a talent show, hosting a car wash day, bag-packing at local supermarkets and even doing a team charity leg wax.

Westwood’s fundraising drive currently stands at half the cost, with £2,500 raised so far, but still require vital funds.

Wasps however, have kindly donated four Wasps tickets to a home game, and a match-day mascot package at a Wasps match for the raffle.

PE Leader at the Academy, David Teasdale, has commended the generosity of Wasps in giving their time to help out the team.

“Training with the Wasps team will not only improve their technical and tactical ability, but will also be a lifelong memory for which to treasure.

“At Westwood, rugby is one of our key sports for boys and girls. We believe that values such as respect, discipline, and teamwork are integral to the development of young people and will help prepare them for later life.

“We are also lucky that we have some talented and enthusiastic rugby players at Westwood and we want to give them the chance to play the sport they love in a completely different environment, where they can learn about different cultures in a Rugby World Cup year.

“We have been blown away with the financial support for the tour so far, which will go towards transport, kits, and other day-to-day costs.”

The tour is set to begin on Friday April 12, but the school will first be invited to the Premiership clash with Sale Sharks tomorrow (Saturday 23), to continue their links with the Academy.

Community and match-day Marketing Manager at Wasps, Verity Brown, added: “When we learned that Westwood Academy would be taking their students on their first ever rugby tour, we immediately wanted to get involved.

“Tours of this kind are great for team bonding and have the potential to encourage youngsters to pursue the sport into later life.

“By giving them the chance to receive some coaching tips in professional surroundings will help them to return home with a couple of wins under their belts!”

Raffle tickets can be purchased by contacting Westwood Academy on 02476 467779, or by emailing David at [email protected]

Further prizes in the raffle include a Heineken Cup match ball, a British & Irish Lions 2009 tour ball, a signed Coventry RFC shirt, and a meal for two at Millsy’s.
