FOOTBALL: ALVIS Sporting had cause for celebration last Saturday after defeating Hampton 4-1 at Green Lane to extend their unbeaten run in the Midland League Division Two to the whole of the 2016 calendar year.

Playing in what was their 31st and final league game of the year, Alvis began the New Year’s Eve festivities early by scoring two goals in the first ten minutes.

On eight minutes Rickie Cutting took advantage of a left wing cross from Dildale Linton to score from eight yards out and two minutes later Linton latched onto a through ball and cut in from the left to cleverly curl the ball around the Hampton goalkeeper.

Alvis continued on the offensive and the chances created should have increased the scoreline, but after 39 minutes they were shocked to concede an own goal in bizarre circumstances.

Alvis were playing the ball backwards with several players involved, and it then bobbled past the Alvis keeper and trickled into the net.

The hosts again dominated in the second half and on the hour extended their lead when Patrick Swieruz and Cutting combined to set up Charlie Cook to net from inside the penalty area.

With two minutes remaining Cook added his second goal of the game, following a fine build up he scored with a low shot to the left of the Hampton keeper.

“We have now reached the half way stage of the league season, and we are in a very good position,” said Alvis boss Damian Cassidy.

“However, we have some very tough games in January in both league and cup competitions, and the results of those games could well have an important bearing on our season.”

Alvis Sporting travel to Leamington Hibernian on Saturday aiming to record their second league double of the season after winning at Green Lane on Boxing Day morning.
