FOOTBALL: YOUNG goalkeeper Cian Tyler is living his childhood dream after signing his first full-time contract for Coventry City.

The Kenilworth youngster is following in the footsteps of former England and Sky Blues goalkeeper Tim Flowers, who was also from Kenilworth, after being offered a scholarship contract commencing when he leaves school.

The Premier League approved contract will run post GCSE for two years between 2018/20 which will ensure that Cian will be at League One side Coventry City at least until he is 18.

“This is a magnificent achievement for Cian who has been at the Coventry City academy since the age of 8 (2010),” said Coventry City’s Academy manager Richard Stevens.

“The journey from Under-9 through the school boy ages is a challenging one and it is always great to see players who have been through the programme from the beginning.

“Cian has shown great commitment and dedication to get to this point. Of course the hard work starts here as growing a career and developing talent is a long term journey.

“Cian has also had recognition with both England and Wales and this is an extended part of his pathway that will give him great experience. We very much hope he will continue to flourish and develop his career at Coventry in the years to come.”

Cian is currently in Year 10 at Warwick School and is a keen all-round sportsman having excelled in the school’s cricket, rugby and basketball teams.

Geoff Tedstone, Director of Sport at Warwick School, said: “We are delighted that he has been granted this fantastic opportunity with Coventry City and I am sure he will continue to work as hard at his football as he does in the classroom and at all his other sporting activities.

“This is clearly only the first step up the ladder but we wish him a very successful future.”

Cian was both surprised and delighted in equal measure by the early offer of the contract and he is particularly looking forward to working with Coventry City’s 1987 FA Cup-winning goalkeeper Steve Ogrizovic.

Gus Lock, Head master at Warwick School, added: “I am delighted that Cian has been offered this very special opportunity.

“He approaches his sport, just as he does his academic studies, with the highest ambitions and an incredible work ethic.

“He is a remarkable young man and, perhaps most impressive of all, he retains a very genuine sense of modesty and humility which endear him to all who know him.”
