FOOTBALL - Frank Lampard stresses importance of consistency after Coventry City thrash QPR in landmark win

FRANK Lampard stressed only consistency will bring Coventry City success this season following an emphatic win against Queens Park Rangers.

The Sky Blues scored seven goals at the Coventry Building Society Arena for the first time since moving to the ground 20 years ago.

And the win means Coventry sit third in the Championship table after scoring seven goals in a league game for the first time since 1963.

However, Lampard does not consider his side’s win against QPR as a statement of Coventry’s intent this season with City’s league campaign only three games old.

Lampard said: “I don’t know and I don’t care.

“I look at the other results and I consider everything after the games, but I don’t consider the statement after three games, I just think about what it means for us.

“It’s great, because it’s a good feeling but a good feeling can easily turn into overconfidence and the expectation and that will just happen.

“My job is to also be level-headed and understand what made that performance and again, it’s work, it’s work with the players.

“They’re very attentive, they work really hard, they take on information but consistency is the only thing that will give us success in this league.”

The Sky Blues found themselves five goals ahead at half time and struck twice more after the break to record their joint-biggest win at the Arena.

Haji Wright, Jack Rudoni and Victor Torp all scored braces while Brandon Thomas-Asante also found the net with Richard Kone on target for the visitors.

The win came after Coventry chairman and owner Doug King confirmed the club had purchased the CBS Arena as the club became owners of the ground for the first time since it opened in 2005.

And Lampard felt the landmark announcement fuelled his side’s performance in the win against QPR.

Lampard added: “It’s a great day. The news of Doug making this Arena officially our home and bringing the club together in that way.

“This is a club with a great history and tradition that’s been through so many things and to make this our home was a really special announcement.

“I’m delighted for everybody. Congratulations to Doug himself, but mainly to the fans of the club, they come and support every week and follow us.

“The onus was then on us to put on a performance, and the boys certainly did that from the first minute.

“It was a performance of quality, a performance of mentality and attitude, and they were at it in every single way.”

Coventry are next in action against Millwall in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, August 26 with kick-off at 7.45pm at The Den.
