Coventry crash prompts calls for road safety action 'before someone is killed'

COUNCILLORS have called for action to tackle speeding on Alderminster Road ‘before someone is killed’ after a car crashed into a house and telegraph pole before bursting into flames.

The city’s Conservative leader Coun Gary Ridley had arranged to visit residents before the crash last month to hear their concerns about a string of speeding incidents.

The latest collision saw the driver pulled from the car and given treatment at the scene before being arrested on suspicion of the theft of a motor vehicle.

No one else was hurt as a result of the crash.

Coun Ridley said, while he recognised last month’s crash happened as a result of ‘serious criminal activity’, it had done nothing to quell public concern about the danger posed by speeding vehicles on the road.

He and other councillors have sent a letter to the council outlining a three-point plan to introduce road safety measures and tackle the issues.

These include installing a mini-roundabout at Beausale Croft to slow down the majority of drivers.

And he added where Alderminster Road met Beausale Croft was a natural point to bring traffic to a halt, given the junction and a kink in the road.

In addition, he said there should be new signage for the mini roundabout as well as chevron signs on existing fencing to warn drivers of the kink.

Coun Ridley also suggested installing average speed cameras in the area and said, long-term, he felt introducing a central refuge at various points along the road would make it safer for people to cross and slow down vehicles in the process.

“We have raised this issue with Coventry City Council on multiple occasions.

“However, this latest incident has served as a poignant reminder that road safety remains a serious problem.

“We believe that enough is enough and now must be the time for action before someone is killed.”

We contacted Coventry City Council for comment but had not received a response at the time of going to press.
