Talented Coventry youngsters release 'powerful' new album

A GROUP of talented Coventry youngsters looking to become the next Terry Hall or Pauline Black have produced a powerful album aimed at highlighting the experiences of and issues facing the city’s young people.

The 11-track album, titled ‘Positive Choices’, is available digitally now.

It takes its name from the Positive Choices project which supports young people in the city by involving them in several creative, musical after-school sessions.

The project ran for two years at Sydney Stringer Academy, Foxford School, The Westwood Academy and Grace Academy, during which time youngsters learnt skills such as songwriting, musical production and how to play instruments.

The album tackles themes such as heartbreak and contains social commentary on difficult topics like gang violence and the cost-of-living crisis.

It taps into an array of genres such as RNB, UK Rap, Spoken Word, Latin and Electronica.

Local organisations such Soundlab-Cov, Studio X, Media Mania and The Tin Music and Arts helped to support the album’s production, while Coventry’s Grammy award-winning artist Daddy Woody also recorded vocals to an instrumental reggae tune produced by the youngsters.

The album is the second project released by the Positive Choices scheme following last year’s ‘In These Towns’.
