QUESTIONS have been raised about the Old Grammar School building after complaints about tiles falling off the roof.
The pathway around the building was cordoned off earlier this month, preventing people from walking on that side of Bishop Street or Hales Street.
Members of the Coventry Society contacted the Observer expressing concerns about the situation.
They claimed tiles were falling off the roof and there were remains of falling debris inside.
Director of operations Steve Wiles said Culture Coventry, which operates the Old Grammar School and Coventry Transport Museum, had temporarily closed the building due to ‘unforeseen issues with the roof’.
“A heritage surveyor has been commissioned to carry out a detailed assessment of the roof and associated structures, to fully understand the extent of remedial works required,” he added.
“As the building is Grade I listed, all care and consideration must be taken to ensure the work is carried out in adherence to historic and architectural guidelines.”
He added that, in the meantime, all necessary precautions were being taken to ensure the public was safe during the works.
In April 2013, Coventry Transport Museum received a £4.6million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund with some of that cash going towards redeveloping the Grade I listed Old Grammar School building.
The 12th-century building, which stood unused for more than 30 years before the redevelopment, reopened to the public in 2015.
It is now an exhibition, event and education space for the museum.
