RESIDENTS in Coventry and Warwickshire are being urged not to travel unless essential after a heavy snowfall.

Roads and motorways are blanketed in snow making driving conditions treacherous with the Met Office predicting more snow will follow.

The M40 northbound was closed after a crash between junction 15 and 16 involving multiple vehicles. Highways England report it  has now been re-opened but traffic is only passing in one.

Coventry city councillor cabinet member for city services, which includes roads, tweeted: “Dear All, Gritters and Snow Ploughs are out across #Coventry, and apparently also JCBs to free stuck cars (!) But it’s still snowing, forecast to continue. Stay home if you can.”

Steve Jackson, of the Bablake weather station, tweeted: ‏”Just crept above freezing at #Bablake at midday to 0.2C; still snowing lightly with 12cm lying snow, the deepest in #Coventry since 21st January 2013 (15cm).”

Warwickshire Police has urged drivers who have to go out to take extra care and to never assume roads have been gritted.

Warwickshire County County has gritters and snowploughs out but also urged drivers not to travel unless absoutely necessary.

Council chiefs also appealed for people to check on potentially vulnerable neighbours such as the elderly.

Due to the heavy snow Chiltern Railways are currently experiencing delays and cancellations on all lines.

Chiltern Railways reports delays and cancellations on all lines.

All lines are blocked between Hatton and Stratford and there will be no service between the stations today.

West Midlands Railway is attempting to run as many trains as possible.

But road conditions have prevented key staff  getting to work leading to a significant delays and cancellations.

Tickets dated for travel today will be accepted  on Monday.
