Pedestrian crossing installed at 'dangerous' Coventry junction after years of campaigning

A NEW pedestrian crossing has now been installed on a junction labelled ‘dangerous’ by campaigners who have spent years calling for work to be conducted.

The new crossings are on the stretch of road where Sewall Highway and Blackberry Lane meet.

A petition was launched by Coventry Citizens Party founder Ian Rogers in 2020 to get the pedestrian crossings installed.

Mr Rogers said he then repeatedly chased the council about the work at the busy junction near Courthouse Green Primary School, where he claimed there had been at least five crashes in recent years.

The Coventry Liberal Democrats have also petitioned for the council to take action on the road in the past, saying it was difficult for pedestrians to cross and was ‘very dangerous’ during peak times with limited visibility at all crossing points.

Both petitions called for improvements to make it safer for residents and schoolchildren.

Mr Rogers said, when he contacted the council last March, he was told the authority was looking at a design and funding.

He added the council told him something could be done after April 2022 as it was unable to secure the cash needed from any other grants at that stage.

The authority also informed Mr Rogers that Sewall Highway was due to be resurfaced and it was unable to put a crossing in until after those works were completed.

A citizens’ party spokesperson questioned why the council did not install the crossings at the same time the authority resurfaced the road but said it was pleased the work had finally been carried out as it made the area safer for school children and residents.
