A MAN spotted in a stolen car unwisely tried to outrun a police dog but was easily caught.
The suspected car thief was tracked down by Police Dog (PD) Gunner in the early hours of yesterday morning after officers spotted the 23-year-old driving the car erratically and overtaking them at 70mph just after midnight.
Response officers tried to pull him over but he sped off and ditched the car in St Paul’s Road, making a run for it.
PD Gunner was called to the scene with his handler, Sgt John Simpson.
The six-year-old German shepherd soon sniffed out the thief and chased him down.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of taking a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, failing to stop and driving while disqualified.
Like most of West Midlands Police’s dogs, Gunner was born into the breed scheme and trained in-house by specialist dog trainers before hitting the streets of the West Midlands to protect the public.
PD Gunner seems to like tracking down criminals in Coventry, earlier this month we reported how he chased down and caught an offensive weapon suspect in the city. Click here to read about that and watch the video.
