A MAN who raped a teenage girl in the 1990s continued his abuse of children some ten years later when he began forcing a boy to perform oral sex on him.
But David Hazell finally paid the price for his perverted activities – when a judge at Coventry Crown Court jailed him for a total of 20 years.
Judge Philip Gregory ordered Hazell to register as a sex offender for life – and imposed an additional 12 months to the time he will spend on licence when he is eventually released.
He had been convicted following a trial of indecently assaulting and raping a teenage girl, three charges of inciting a boy to take part in sexual activity and four of raping him.
The 52 year-old, of Ladbroke Road, Bishops Itchington, who had denied the charges, continues to protest his innocence and intends to appeal against his conviction, the court heard.
Prosecutor Matthew Barnes said in the 1990s Hazell was at the home of a 14 year-old girl when, in the kitchen of the house, he touched her bottom over her clothing.
Later, when she was 16 or 17 and had left home, he visited her at her new flat where he raped her – but she did not disclose what had happened until the police began to investigate Hazell’s later offences.
His victim on those occasions some ten years later was a young boy, aged between six and ten.
Two of the charges reflect incidents when Hazell had got the boy to touch him over his trousers, and one when he had caused the lad to do so under his clothing.
But Hazell’s most serious offences were four charges of raping the boy by making him perform oral sex on him.
Mr Barnes said in her statement Hazell’s first victim, who is now in her 30s, said the offences caused her to suffer mental health problems, including a severe break-down.
And the mother of the boy, who is still only in his teens, said he had self-harmed as a result of what he suffered.
Sean Logan, defending, who said Hazell has children of his own and was a hard-working man who had built up his own IT business, conceded: “He’s under no delusions as to the outcome today.”
Hazell was given concurrent sentences of six months and seven years for the offences against the girl.
Sentences of four years, six years and 13 years for his offences against the boy were also concurrent to each-other – but consecutive to the seven years in relation to his earlier victim.
In relation to the boy, Judge Gregory said: “That young child was subjected to prolonged sexual abuse.
“He was deeply distressed when he gave evidence, as I saw myself. The court must have regard to the effect of this offending on the victims.
“Sexual offending over this period of time and of this gravity will be met by condign punishment. It was a vile course of conduct.”
