FOOTBALL - Brandon Thomas-Asante reflects on 'instinctive' goal of the season contender against Swansea

BRANDON Thomas-Asante has found a new lease of life under Coventry City boss Frank Lampard after scoring a goal of the season contender against Swansea City.

Thomas-Asante doubled City’s lead at the Swansea.com Stadium with a stunning 40-yard lob over Swans goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux.

The 26-year-old has now scored three goals in his last four league games and admits his strike against Swansea was born out of instinct.

Thomas-Asante said: “I’m happy for it to have come off, It’s something that I try now and again, and it doesn’t always come off but it’s something that I persist with.

“Not to give it away, I like to have a look at the keeper on the counter-attack and thankfully I caught him.

“It was quite instinctive because the midfielder took a touch, and I saw it get away from him and sort of just checked because it’s one where the keeper wouldn’t be expecting it and like I say sometimes it may not come off but this time I’m grateful that it went in.

“It’s one of those when you try something like that it’s not guaranteed that it comes off perfectly, but I think the spin probably took it away from the goalkeeper a little bit and when he got a hand to it my heart was in my mouth a little bit but I’m grateful that it dropped in.”

Thomas-Asante also teed up strike partner Ellis Simms for City’s opener against Swansea as the Sky Blues claimed their first win in South Wales since 1950.

And the forward enjoyed playing alongside Simms in a front two as the pair combined to great effect.

Thomas-Asante added: “This is my first season here and that’s what I realise everyone talks to each other it’s an intimate changing room and were able to get that relationship with everyone and you want to work for your mates so that what we try to do.

“I think anyone that plays up front with a striker like Ellis makes it easier for you because he’s one of the most honest strikers that you’ll see he works hard, and he’s naturally blessed with that physique that you see intimidates defenders and he gets himself in positions and he’s an unselfish striker as well.

“So, it makes it really good, we changed to a front two and I know that I enjoy it not just me and Ellis, but you have all the others. Norman, Haji, and you had Ephron coming in off the side when he was playing getting in positions.

“Just being able to link together with any of the combinations we have the talent and the relationships to do that as a unit and we all back each other and want each other to do well so it does help.”

Coventry host Leeds United on Wednesday, February 5 with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
