CARL Rushworth stressed the importance of Coventry City delivering a ‘statement’ win after the Sky Blues battled to a 1-0 victory against Bristol City.
Rushworth produced a stunning stop in injury time to preserve the points after Ephron Mason-Clark’s second-half goal put the Sky Blues ahead at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
And after failing to win two successive matches prior to their victory against the Robins, Rushworth hopes the result could prove to be a turning point in City’s season.
Rushworth said: “It was the perfect game and perfect time for us to put a statement in after two disappointing games.
“I enjoyed every minute of it, even though we were under the cosh a little bit towards the end, it’s that grit and determination to get the clean sheet.
“It shows the togetherness and passion we’ve got as a collective to keep pushing forward and keep putting points on the table.
“Every win is three points but there’s turning points. When we lost to Wrexham we went on an unbelievable run again.
“This could be a turning point for us and allow us to go on another really good run hopefully.”
Coventry remain five points clear of Middlesbrough at the top of the Championship table.
However, Rushworth insists the Sky Blues must not become carried away with their position in the table.
Rushworth added: “It’s all about us. The gaffer says it all the time ‘if we’re on form we’ll beat anybody’.
“There’s no point getting carried away. We’re only 21 games into the season and it’s a very long season.
“We’re not even at Christmas yet so we need to get throgh this period and take each game as it comes.
“Hopefully we can look back on it at the end of the season and be in the position we wanted to be in.”
Coventry are next in action against Southampton on Saturday, December 20 with kick-off at 12.30pm at St Mary’s Stadium.
