COVENTRY City claimed an impressive 2-0 victory away at play-off chasing Blackburn Rovers to secure back-to-back wins for the first time since November.
Goals either side of half time from Ellis Simms and Brandon Thomas-Asante sealed City’s first away win of the New Year at Ewood Park.
The result means Coventry sit 13th in the Championship table, seven points behind Blackburn who occupy the final play-off spot.
Blackburn almost broke the deadlock early on as Oliver Dovin produced an acrobatic save to push Makhtar Gueye’s powerful header over the crossbar.
And Dovin made another excellent stop soon after as he reacted quickly to keep out Danny Batth’s header.
Rovers remained in the ascendancy with Dovin only able to punch a corner into the path of Gueye who saw his goalbound effort cleared by Thomas-Asante.
However, the Sky Blues took the lead on 41 minutes when Rovers failed to clear their lines at a corner and Victor Torp sliced a ball to the back post which Simms headed into the net from close range.
And City struck again three minutes after the interval as Thomas-Asante turned home Jack Rudoni’s ball across the box from three-yards out.
The home side searched for a way back into the game as Joel Latibeaudiere cleared Gueye’s low shot to safety.
And Gueye was thwarted again later in the half as Dovin reacted sharply, diving to his left, to keep out the striker’s effort from inside the box.
City had a chance to seal the points when Milan van Ewijk burst into the box and the ball ran into the path of Rudoni only for the midfielder’s first time shot to hit the outside of the post.
Coventry are next in action against Watford on Saturday, January 25 with kick-off at 3pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
