COVENTRY City lifted the Championship title following a 3-1 home victory against play-off chasing Wrexham in the club’s final home game of the season.

Sky Blues skipper Matt Grimes lifted the trophy following the conclusion of the match after head coach Frank Lampard addressed a packed Coventry Building Society Arena.

Goals from Brandon Thomas-Asante, Victor Torp and Ephron Mason-Clark ensured Coventry marked the trophy lift with a victory after Oliver Rathbone had draw Wrexham level.

And the win extends Coventry’s unbeaten run to seven matches with the Sky Blues to end the campaign with a trip to Watford.

The Sky Blues broke the deadlock on 19 minutes when Brandon Thomas-Asante volleyed in Mason-Clark’s perfect cross from the left from close range.

However, the Red Dragons equalised six minutes later as Rathbone lashed a first time shot through the legs of Carl Rushworth from Issa Kabore’s cutback.

The visitors almost completed the turnaround before the break only for George Thomason to see his shot from just inside the penalty area come back off the base of the post.

Coventry almost reclaimed the lead early in the second half as Danny Ward sprung low to his left to turn Haji Wright’s header around the post.

Wrexham spurned a golden chance to take the lead later in the second period as Rushworth denied Sam Smith when one-on-one.

However, the home side went back in front 10 minutes from time when substitute Victor Torp powered a free-kick into the net from 25-yards out despite the best efforts of Ward.

And the Sky Blues completed the scoring four minutes into injury time as Mason-Clark collected Frank Onyeka’s pass and coolly finished beyond Ward from eight-yards out.

Post-match celebrations followed on the pitch as Lampard and his players received their league winners’ medals and lifted the Championship trophy.

Coventry finish the season away at Watford on Saturday, May 2 with kick-off at 12.30pm at Vicarage Road.
