COVENTRY Sphinx suffered a 2-1 opening day defeat against Desborough Town on the club’s return to Step Five.
The visitors raced into a two-goal lead courtesy of strikes from Iain Blaikie and Aidan Bradshaw before Dylan Parker halved the deficit for Sphinx after the break at the Cameron Slater Arena.
And the result means Coventry sit 13th in the United Counties League Premier Division South table.
The game concluded the League’s ‘Ground Hop’ event with saw six matches take place across three days in neighbouring counties as more than 400 supporters watched on.
Sphinx made the worst possible start to the new season when Blaikie put Desborough ahead just two minutes into the new season.
And Bradshaw doubled the away side’s lead on 19 minutes to leave Coventry with a mountain to climb at the break.
Sphinx responded on 64 minutes through Parker but could not find a leveller as the home side began the season with a defeat.
Coventry are next in action against Yaxley on Saturday, August 1 with kick-off at 3pm at APG Park.
