ELLIS Simms stressed the importance of playing to the final whistle after scoring a last gasp winner for Coventry City at Sheffield Wednesday.
Simms netted an injury-time winner for the Sky Blues at Hillsborough after opening the scoring earlier in the game.
And after chasing down a seemingly lost cause at the death to score City’s winner, Simms stressed the importance of playing until the very end.
Simms said: “In football you have to play to the final whistle, so it was a nice goal at the end and to get the three points is massive for us.
“I looked at the time and I think it was the 93rd minute and knew that the game would be done after that, so I thought just sprint and chase it down, the game’s done after that and then get back in position.
“But I chased it down and next minute the keeper had dropped it, and I just slotted it home. So, it’s just a great feeling, you’ve just got to play to the whistle.
“There were spells where we had to suffer a little bit because we know they’re a good team, especially at this ground as well as the fans are quite intense, we had to defend well and overall, we dug in.”
Simms broke the deadlock on 16 minutes when he glanced Jack Rudoni’s cross from the right into the bottom left corner from eight-yards out.
And after Joel Latibeaudiere’s own goal drew the home side level, Simms scored the winner two minutes into injury time after Wednesday goalkeeper James Beadle dropped a high ball and the striker finished into an empty net.
The Sky Blues have won six of their last seven league matches and sit one place and one point outside of the play-off places.
And Simms insists City want to continue climbing up the table but must remain grounded if they want to maintain their fine recent form.
Simms added: “It’s a great run of from, we’ve won two before losing two, which were difficult games against Leeds and Ipswich but we need to keep our feet on the ground.
“We know this league is so tight around the play-off positions, the margins between like eighth and 15th place for example are all tight.
“So, we just need to just keep working game by game, focus on the next one and not look too far ahead and hopefully just keep winning.
“We just want to climb the table and we’ve done that.”
Coventry are next in action against Preston North End on Saturday, February 22 with kick-off at 3pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
