FOOTBALL - Frank Lampard explains reasons behind Coventry City contract extensions

FRANK Lampard insists Coventry City must continue to improve players in their current squad after three defenders signed new deals with the club.

The defensive trio of Milan van Ewijk, Liam Kitching and Jay Dasilva have all signed new contracts with the Sky Blues.

All three players have been a mainstay of Coventry’s defence this season with the Sky Blues currently top of the Championship table.

And Lampard stressed the need for Coventry to improve players in their current squad rather than relying on signing new players.

Lampard said: “I’m delighted, it’s deserved. He’s [Milan van Ewijk] a very good player and a great player to work with from my point of view.

“He’s forever engaging with you. I want to help him improve and I think we’ve done that since we’ve worked together.

“There’s more to come from him. It’s great for him, it’s great for the club and for the security on both sides.

“It’s stability for the players. Jay and Kitch have been a big mainstay of our performances this season in their own positions.

“If we want to improve we have to try and keep players and improve and keep working with them as much as adding them in.”

Coventry triumphed in a top-of-the-table clash against Middlesbrough last time out to return to the Championship’s summit.

And Lampard insists the Sky Blues must remain focused ahead of a trip to struggling West Bromwich Albion this weekend.

Lampard added: “The element for us is to try and go and get the right result and perform as well as we can.

“We’re very focused on trying to do our job. Our focus has to be on what we do on the pitch.”

Coventry travel to West Brom on Saturday, February 21 with kick-off at 12.30pm at The Hawthorns.
