FOOTBALL - Frank Lampard praises 'bond' between Coventry City players after Sheffield United win

FRANK Lampard praised the ‘bond’ between his Coventry City players after the Sky Blues came from behind to beat Sheffield United.

Goals from Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Bobby Thomas and Brandon Thomas-Asante sealed a 3-1 victory for the Sky Blues at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

And Coventry now lead the Championship table by four points ahead of a trip to second-placed Stoke City this weekend.

Lampard hailed his side’s second-half display against the Blades and felt City’s third goal epitomised the spirit of his players.

Lampard said: “The second half was what we want to be and what we’ve been for big parts of the season.

“There was real energy in the team, little tactical tweaks but the main tweak was our approach to the game and how fast we were and how much pressure we put on them which changed the whole course of the match.

“If we want to have success this season it has to be [based] off that. You can’t always do it for 90 minutes but we have to believe that that’s what we can be as a team.

“It’s a big deal [Haji Wright squaring the ball for the third goal]. There’s a good bond between the players and that’s a little moment that shows that.

“It’s a little action that shows we’re in a good place and we can’t lose that place or that attitude.”

Former Sky Blues defender Sam McCallum put the visitors ahead before Coventry staged a second-half comeback.

Lampard introduced Jamie Allen from the bench in injury time and the midfielder played a key pass in the build up to Thomas-Asante’s late strike.

And Lampard praised the midfielder’s attitude on and off the pitch after he made another telling contribution against the Blades.

Lampard added: “It was a great action, he nicks it, takes time and puts Haji through.

“It’s more his approach to what can he give to the team every day in training.

“If we want to have success here, players have to come in and play and train with that attitude.

“He does it every day. He’s a great professional.

“I’ve only worked with him for a year but to work with him as a manager, players who act like that and behave like that you have a special feeling for.”

Coventry are next in action against Stoke City on Saturday, November 8 with kick-off at 3pm at the bet365 Stadium.
