FRANK Lampard branded Coventry City’s win against Sunderland as a ‘complete performance’ after the Sky Blues cruised to a 3-0 victory.
A hat-trick from Haji Wright inspired City to a dominant win against their play-off rivals at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
And Lampard felt the performance was the best Coventry have played since taking charge of the Sky Blues.
Lampard said: “I would say so [the best performance since taking charge], because of the level of opponent as well. From the first minute the players were really at it in every sense, on and off the ball.
“They moved it quickly and moved it well and did the things we spoke about before, to get control early on and play the game in their half a lot.
“We counter-pressed really well when we lost the ball, we were really fast.
“Then we get the goals that we deserved and even in the second half, there was a couple of little moments of transition for them but other than that we continued. Complete performance.”
The Sky Blues broke the deadlock on 21 minutes when Victor Torp slid the ball into the path of Wright who fired a low effort into the bottom right corner from 25-yards out.
And the home side won a penalty eight minutes later as Chris Mepham tripped Wright as he cut into the penalty area.
Wright picked himself up to doubled City’s lead from the spot with cool finish down the middle of the goal.
And the Sky Blues sealed the points in style on 73 minutes as Torp played in Wright who lifted the ball over an onrushing Anthony Patterson and into the net.
The result means Coventry sit fifth in the Championship table, two points clear of the chasing pack in the race for a play-off place.
And Lampard praised hat-trick hero Wright’s all-round game in the forward’s first start at home since November.
Lampard added: “I haven’t seen Haji, other than what I’ve seen before, so I was excited to get him back and to play him in this level of game and to show what he did was really impressive.
“He’s been out for a while and had a few substitute appearances and a difficult game against Derby, as it was for everyone, but it was an outstanding individual performance.
“I know he is a big player for us, so to see it in the flesh and be that clinical at the top end of the pitch, to have success you want those players at the top end of the pitch, so to have that confidence and to be able to play the way he played was brilliant.
“His work ethic, competing for headers, then when the ball was at his feet and when he had space, or didn’t have space, he moves it so well.”
Coventry return to action against Sheffield United on Friday, March 28 with kick-off at 8pm at Bramall Lane.
