FOOTBALL - Frank Lampard refusing to get 'carried away' after Coventry City's win at Blackburn

FRANK Lampard is refusing to get ‘carried away’ following Coventry City’s impressive 2-0 win at Blackburn Rovers.

The Sky Blues ended their four-game winless run on the road as Ellis Simms and Brandon Thomas-Asante netted either side of the break at Ewood Park.

And after City secured back-to-back wins in the league for the first time since October/November, Lampard wants the Sky Blues to find better consistency in their performances.

Lampard said: “These things are important for building feeling that we can come to places like this and then win and win two games on the trot.

“Now we have to recover and go again. Winning games like this in this league, a midweek game away from home, we haven’t done it for a while, so it’s really important for feeling and the lads have to understand what it takes to win them.

“It’s step-by-step, we know we need to find consistency, something we haven’t found enough this season, so it’s important we don’t get carried away.

“Our performances need to be good, keep battling and there is a good feeling in the group, and we have to keep that no matter what comes round the corner.”

The Sky Blues took the lead on 41 minutes when Rovers failed to clear their lines at a corner and Victor Torp sliced a ball to the back post which Simms headed into the net from close range.

And City struck again three minutes after the interval as Thomas-Asante turned home Jack Rudoni’s ball across the box from three-yards out.

Goalkeeper Oliver Dovin produced a number of fine saves throughout including a pair of crucial stops with the game still goalless.

The Sky Blues keeper produced an acrobatic save to push Makhtar Gueye’s powerful header over the crossbar early on.

Dovin then reacted quickly to keep out Danny Batth’s header before later denying Gueye again in the second period.

And head coach Lampard believes the Sky Blues have taken another step forward following their victory at Ewood Park.

Lampard added: “We didn’t play well in the first half-hour, and we got into it later in the half, but we should be more confident to play, and the players are better than what they showed in that period.

“We came through it and we get our goal and we get what we deserve. You think back to Norwich and those games where we feel like things have gone against us but we took our opportunities and we got what we deserved.

“It was a difficult game, and it was always going to be, they’re fifth in the league for a reason.

“We did some of the difficult stuff, dig in and defend well, see out the game and I thought we saw it out really well, the substitutes had an impact. It was a good night and a good step forward.”

Coventry are next in action against Watford on Saturday, January 25 with kick-off at 3pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
