VIKTOR Gyokeres scored twice as Coventry City eased to a fourth successive victory in the league with a 2-0 win against Queens Park Rangers.
Gyokeres opened the scoring early on before he sealed the win late in the second half with the Sky Blues on their longest winning run in the league since February 2020 after victory at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
The result means Coventry sit 11th in the Sky Bet Championship table ahead of a month-long break for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
And Mark Robins’ side were quick out of the blocks as Gustavo Hamer sent Callum O’Hare away down the right before the latter’s cross was headed across goal by the former only for the ball to deflect kindly into the arms of the goalkeeper.
The visitors responded with a chance of their own as Ilias Chair shot well wide of Ben Wilson’s goal from distance after the ball sat up nicely for the midfielder to shoot.
However, Coventry broke the deadlock on 11 minutes when Jamie Allen’s mishit shot fell to Gyokeres who turned his man before firing home off the underside of the crossbar from eight-yards out.
Coventry came forward again soon after when O’Hare played in Gyokeres down the left channel only for the striker to shoot straight at Seny Dieng from a tight angle.
Rangers spurned a good chance to draw level when Rob Dickie headed just wide of the post from a corner from five-yards out.
And Wilson then made a stunning one-handed save to push Dickie’s goalbound effort from 25-yards out over the crossbar with the ball destined for the top-right corner.
The Sky Blues settled the game on 78 minutes when O’Hare slipped in an unmarked Gyokeres who coolly found the bottom right corner from 12-yards out.
City had one final chance to increase their lead with Gyokeres denied a hat-trick when his header from seven-yards out was superbly tipped over the top by Dieng from Josh Eccles’ perfect cross from the right.
Coventry are next in action away at Reading on Saturday, December 10 with kick-off at 3pm at the Madejski Stadium.
