FOOTBALL - Matt Grimes insists Coventry City must 'keep levels high' to achieve Premier League promotion after Swansea City win

MATT Grimes insists Coventry City must ‘keep their levels high’ if the club are to secure promotion to the Premier League.

Grimes scored against former club Swansea to help the Sky Blues move nine points clear at the top of the Championship table.

The midfielder struck either side of goals from Brandon Thomas-Asante and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto at the Swansea.com Stadium.

And Grimes insists Coventry must continue to play at the same level that has seen the club spend much of the season at the top of the table if the Sky Blues are to secure a place in the Premier League next term.

Grimes said: “We just have to keep going and keep ticking them off.

“It’s just the next one. We’ve put ourselves in a brilliant position.

“We just need to keep our levels as high as possible as they have been all season to get the job over the line.

“The way we’ve played throughout the season has put us where we are so we just need to carry on.”

Grimes made more than 300 appearances for Swansea during a 10-year spell with the Welsh club.

And the midfielder admitted he decided against celebrating his goal out of respect for his former employers.

Grimes added: “It was strange. I spent a long time here so it was strange coming back being in the away dressing room.

“But once we were out on the pitch it was good. It was good to get on the scoresheet but the main thing is the three points.

“I’ve got a lot of love for the club [Swansea]. I spent a good chunk of my years here and they gave me a lot.

“Out of respect for the club and for the people I felt it was right not to [celebrate].

“We did everything we needed to do and I thought it was the perfect away performance.”

Coventry are next in action against Derby County on Friday, April 3 with kick-off at 8pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
