FOOTBALL - Rhys Carr praises Bassette after young striker scores first Coventry City goal in Sheffield United draw

RHYS Carr praised Coventry City’s spirit after the Sky Blues came from behind to draw with 10-man Sheffield United.

Coventry’s interim boss has now collected two points from as many matches against the division’s top two teams as Norman Bassette and Bobby Thomas both found the net against the Blades.

However, Carr insists City must stop falling behind in games, having failed to score the opening goal in each of their last three matches.

Carr said: “The players are so competitive. They have shown incredible character, spirit and everything in the last couple games.

“We do not want to take a punch on the nose first, so that is the disappointment really.

“At the same time, to come back against two top teams in this division is really pleasing.

“The players have been brilliant, the way they have applied themselves. Then with the quality we have got in there as well, we are always confident we can get results.

“I am using a day-by-day life. I am sure there will be a conversation after the game because I think there needs to be, for the clarification.

“If I am asked to do the next game, I will do it to the best of my ability.”

Newly-capped Belgium international Bassette drew the Sky Blues level with his first goal for the club after Tyrese Campbell put the visitors ahead at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The Blades reclaimed the lead courtesy of Jesurun Rak-Sakyi’s fine finish before United defender Anel Ahmedhodzic saw red for violent conduct following an off-the-ball tussle with Bassette.

City eventually drew level 10 minutes from time when Thomas headed in a corner from the right as the Sky Blues played out a draw in their first home game since the sacking of former boss Mark Robins.

And Carr believes 20-year-old talent Bassette has the potential to be a ‘really good player’ in the future.

Carr added: “Norman is already a good player, but he is going to be a really good player.

“His pace, his finishing ability and his willingness to run in behind and stretch defences.

“He is a confident boy anyway, but the cap in the week for a top footballing nation like Belgium has given him another spring in his step.”

Coventry are next in action away at Burnley on Tuesday, November 26 with kick-off at 7.45pm at Turf Moor.
