FOOTBALL - Romain Esse believes Frank Lampard can help him reach 'next level' at Coventry City

ROMAIN Esse believes Coventry City head coach Frank Lampard can take his game to the next level.

Esse joined the Sky Blues on loan from Crystal Palace earlier this week and could make his debut for the club against Stoke City in the FA Cup third round.

The 20-year-old became the club’s second arrival of the January transfer window following the loan signing of Yang Min-Hyeok from Tottenham Hotspur.

And Esse cited Sky Blues head coach Lampard as one of the key factors in deciding to move to the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Esse said: “I’ve enjoyed it a lot, meeting the lads and the staff. It’s all been very welcoming.

“It’s a good environment. I’m looking forward to playing my first game on Saturday.

“I’m determined to do whatever I can to impress here and help the side.

“It’s one of the main reasons I’m here. Not just to play every week but to also raise the levels and compete.

“I’ve played against Coventry before and they’ve always been a tough opponent.

“And Frank Lampard, from watching him on my TV, helps a lot.

“It just feels like the right environment and the right person to take me to the next level in my development.”

Esse has made just eight appearances for Palace in all competitions this season including three in the UEFA Conference League.

He moved to Palace from Championship side Millwall in January last year after scoring seven goals in 66 appearances for the Lions.

And the young forward wants to excite the Coventry fans on the pitch.

Esse added: “I’d describe myself as exciting who gets the fans up and off their seats.

“I’m here to get the job done and the points and the wins for the Coventry fans.

“This is the pivotal part to play until the season ends.

“I don’t have to think about goals and assists, with game-time, I know what I’m capable of.”

Coventry travel to Stoke on Saturday, January 10 with kick-off at 3pm at the bet365 Stadium.
