James makes a call to arms ahead of top-two battles

MIDFIELDER Matty James says a big few weeks lie ahead for Coventry City, in the wake of Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Cardiff City which sent the Sky Blues down to 20th in the Championship table.

Mark Robins’ side were first undone by a Kieffer Moore double shortly before the break, before receiving an untimely sucker punch a minute into the second half when Josh Murphy added the Bluebirds’ third, enough to render a Dominic Hyam effort in the 81st minute a mere consolation.

With two crunch games against leaders Norwich City on Wednesday night, followed by a meeting with second-placed Brentford on Saturday in a St Andrew’s double-header, the 29-year-old has urged his teammates to get to grips with the rigours of the division quickly.

“This is the first year back in the Championship with this squad and ultimately how the team’s played in the first half of the season and in games I have been in; you can tell we are a good team but the Championship is a tough league and lessons are learnt, you have to learn from them quickly,” said the Leicester City loanee.

“Coventry have got to be pleased these players have come into the Championship and held their own and we have some big games coming up now.

“To come to Cardiff and the way they play and the players they have got, you have got to have that (fighting spirit) and you have to earn the right to play, there are other games like that where the ball will spend more time in the air opposed to the floor.

“You have to compete for the first ball and second ball and these are things you have to get nailed down. Obviously, we have to be ruthless at the other end of the pitch because the chances created to goal ratio isn’t where it needs to be at the moment.

“The positive is that the chances are being created and we need to keep the backdoor shut and be more aggressive in terms of that.”
