FOOTBALL - Frank Lampard rues 'dropped points' after Coventry City held by Oxford

FRANK Lampard admits Coventry City ‘dropped points’ after surrendering the lead twice in a 2-2 draw against Oxford United.

Goals from Haji Wright and Victor Torp twice put the Sky Blues ahead only for Will Lankshear and Cameron Brannagan to draw the U’s level at the Kassam Stadium.

Coventry remain unbeaten heading into the first international break of the season but Lampard admits he and his players still want more.

Lampard said: “I’m disappointed to drop points.

“They made the second half difficult for us without doubt, but first half was probably as good as you can play, without being two, three, four-nil up.

“We gave them a bit of a lifeline by it being alive for them and they took that.

“Disappointed, as I say in a way but never disappointed with the effort of the players and desire to try and win games.

“We’ve had a pretty good start and we always want more. We’ve played some good stuff, scored a lot of goals.

“We’ve all felt and watched the games that we have been the better team in all our games, we end up with two wins and two draws.

“Now we have to take a bit of stock, freshen up a bit, and go again.”

The Sky Blues broke the deadlock on 12 minutes when Haji Wright fired a shot through Oxford goalkeeper Jamie Cumming after the U’s failed to deal with Jack Rudoni’s low ball in from the left.

However, the home side equalised seven minutes later as Lankshear finished on the rebound after Carl Rushworth could only parry Cameron Brannagan’s powerful low free-kick back into the danger zone.

City reclaimed the lead on 37 minutes when Torp blasted a free-kick high into the net from a central position just outside the penalty area.

However, Brannagan drew the hosts level for a second time on 75 minutes when he curled a free-kick around the wall and past Rushworth at his near post from 20-yards out.

And Lampard admits Oxford improved in the second half and felt his side failed to wrestle back the momentum of the game.

Lampard added: “We needed to try and get the ball back and keep it a bit and be a bit more connected at the bottom of the pitch.

“I think you just have to give them credit. Everything felt a bit sharper from them in the second half and balls were ricocheting and dropping to them and then turning us round.

“We could have dealt with little situations throughout the second half a bit better.

“I understand when even the mentality of knowing you’ve completely dominated the game as much as you can for half and then you feel it turn, it’s not always easy to grab back.”

Coventry are next in action against Norwich City on Saturday, September 13 with kick-off at 3pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
